A delegation of representatives of the Croatian islands with representatives of other European countries gathered 28/03/2017. in Brussels at an event organized by the European Parliament representatives on the topic of Smart islands. Representatives of local self-government islets are also signatories to the Declaration of smart island that wants to identify potential development of European islands for sustainable development to energy and economic independence. From Dubrovnik-Neretva County Declaration was signed by Andrija Fabris, mayor of Korcula and Vjeran Filippi, president of the LAG 5.
Inspired already established by the initiative of the European Commission's 'Smart Cities and Communities "initiative was launched' Smart Islands" which is next to the existing focus areas of energy, transport and information and communication technologies further extended to water and waste directly addressing the principles of circular economy.
The initiative 'Smart Islands "wants to islands become smart, inclusive and successful community and in this respect encouraged to take concrete steps in the direction of raising awareness about climate change and build appropriate solutions at the local level, the use of smart technologies that ensure optimal use and management of resources and infrastructure, introduction of sustainable transport, reduction and reuse of waste, strengthening social inclusion and education of the local population and the overall change towards sustainable and responsible tourism all forms.
